Letterbox cakes: five things to check before ordering

Letterbox cakes can be convenient, but the recipient still needs a suitable delivery point. We explain five practical checks for sending a cake card or slice gift to a home, flat or workplace.

Letterbox-friendly cake can make receiving a gift simpler. It is still worth checking how the parcel will reach the recipient, especially at a flat, a shared building or an office.

Before selecting a cake card or postal slice, work through these five checks. They help avoid a thoughtful gift arriving at the wrong place or while the recipient is away.

1. Check the delivery point

Find out whether the address has a private letterbox, a communal mailbox, a reception desk or a parcel room. A building entrance and a recipient's own letterbox are not always the same delivery point.

If the opening looks narrow or there is a security flap, ask us for the packed dimensions of the selected product before ordering. Measure the usable opening, including its height, width and any obstruction. A product being described as letterbox-friendly cannot guarantee a fit through every opening.

2. Use the full address

Include the flat or unit number, building or company name, street and postcode. For a workplace, use the recipient's name as it is known to reception. Check whether there are restrictions on personal parcels or delivery outside opening hours.

Tell us about an access issue before the order is confirmed. Do not place sensitive entry codes in a public gift message.

3. Make sure someone can deal with the gift

Check holidays, work patterns and whether the address will be occupied. Cake is food, so the recipient needs to retrieve it and follow the supplied storage instructions. A parcel waiting behind a letterbox for several days is different from one opened after delivery.

Our surprise-planning guide suggests ways to check availability while keeping the contents a surprise.

4. Read the contents, not just the product name

The Happy Birthday Cake Card includes two slices. Honey Cake by Post is a one-slice product. Check quantity, personalisation and ingredients against the recipient's needs.

For allergy questions, contact us using our allergen information before buying. A compact parcel has the same ingredient and cross-contact considerations as a larger order.

5. Confirm dispatch and the delivery service

Preparation happens before the parcel is posted. Free tracked delivery is included for our postal products within mainland England, Scotland and Wales. If an occasion date is essential, please ask before ordering. We will confirm whether we can meet it before payment; standard arrival dates are estimates unless we expressly agree otherwise.

The complete cake-by-post guide explains these stages. Once the receiving arrangements are clear, you can choose the card, note or cake message with confidence.

Questions people ask before ordering

The practical details that matter first

These are the bits customers usually want answered before they commit: freshness, delivery timing, and whether a postal cake is the right fit at all.

Will a letterbox cake fit through every letterbox?

No universal fit can be assumed. Ask for the packed dimensions of the selected product and compare them with the usable opening, including any security flap or obstruction.

Can we send cake to a workplace?

Check that reception accepts food parcels and confirm the full company address, recipient name and opening hours. Tell us about any delivery restriction before ordering.

Is the recipient being away a problem?

Yes, it can be. The recipient needs to retrieve the food and follow its storage instructions. Check their availability before arranging the parcel.

Choose the format that suits the journey

If the parcel has to go across the UK mainland, start with the cakes by post range for standard-design honey cake, honey cake slices, or caramel biscuits vacuum-packed for post. If the order depends on height, chilled fillings, or a detailed design brief, browse the custom cakes range for the celebration options that are better suited to local delivery, collection, or UK delivery by agreement.
